MLC Voyager | KPN Teleradiology
KPN Teleradiology is a cloud-based teleradiology solution delivering fast, affordable diagnostic imaging services to underserved communities across Kenya. By partnering with rural, public, and mission health facilities, the platform bridges the critical shortage of radiologists, enabling early diagnosis and timely treatment for vulnerable populations who would otherwise lack access to essential imaging services.
60,000 Lives Impacted
KPN Teleradiology is transforming healthcare access in Kenya by providing timely, affordable diagnostic imaging to underserved communities, especially in rural and peri-urban areas. In a country where over 70% of the population lives outside major cities and fewer than 200 radiologists serve 55 million people, KPN’s solution bridges a critical gap in healthcare delivery. By enabling local facilities to transmit imaging studies (X-rays, CT, MRI, and mammograms) via cloud-based software, KPN ensures patients receive radiology reports within hours instead of weeks. This has reduced diagnostic delays, unnecessary referrals, and out-of-pocket travel costs.
Since launching in 2022, KPN has partnered with over 10 health facilities and supported diagnosis and treatment for more than 60,000 patients. Turnaround time for reports has dropped from weeks to under 6 hours, with emergency cases prioritized within 30 minutes. This has led to earlier diagnosis of pneumonia, stroke, trauma, cancers, and chronic conditions, improving survival and treatment outcomes. The model’s cost-efficiency has made radiology accessible for low-income populations, while ongoing training and mentorship are strengthening local capacity. KPN’s work supports Kenya’s universal health coverage goals and is a scalable, sustainable innovation improving lives across the health system.
The Innovation
KPN Teleradiology is a cloud-based diagnostic imaging service that addresses the critical shortage of radiologists in Kenya by providing remote image interpretation to underserved health facilities. Through KPN’s lightweight Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), radiographers in rural and peri-urban hospitals upload medical images (X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and mammograms), which are then interpreted by a centralized team of licensed radiologists. Reports are typically returned within six hours for routine cases and within 30 minutes for emergencies, enabling timely diagnosis and treatment.
KPN’s innovation is currently implemented across public, mission, and low-cost private hospitals in Kenya, serving patients who would otherwise face delays, misdiagnosis, or high costs due to geographic and financial barriers. Over 80% of our beneficiaries live on less than $5.50/day, including women, children, the elderly, and informal workers.
KPN’s model is unique in its shared-service approach, which makes radiology affordable for low-resource facilities without hiring full-time specialists. It is integrated into existing facility workflows and aligned with government health financing mechanisms. KPN’s future plans include scaling to over 500 facilities and integrating AI tools for image triage and interpretation to further enhance speed, accuracy, and reach across Kenya and other African countries.
