Agri-Fresh Digital Ecosystems

MLC Voyager | Kutlwano Holdings (Pty) Ltd

AgriFresh is a voice‑first AI mobile marketplace that connects smallholder farmers in South Africa directly to institutional buyers, eliminating predatory intermediaries. It addresses post‑harvest loss and low farmer incomes by providing real‑time price discovery, AI‑powered crop quality verification, and secure escrow payments, all accessible via voice commands in indigenous languages and offline‑capable functionality. The solution indirectly impacts over farmers and community members by improving market access and reducing waste.

1,000 Lives Impacted

AgriFresh is transforming the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in South Africa by breaking the cycle of exploitation by predatory middlemen. Though still in its scaling phase, the innovation has already indirectly impacted over 1,000 farmers and community members by creating a transparent, voice‑first digital marketplace that links producers directly to institutional buyers.

Key impacts to date include:
- Increased income potential – Farmers using the platform can earn up to 10 times more for their produce by accessing fair, real‑time prices.
- Reduced post‑harvest losses – Real‑time buyer matching and price discovery significantly cut the amount of fresh produce that would otherwise rot before reaching market.
- Improved market access – The voice‑first interface in indigenous languages (Sepedi, Xitsonga, isiZulu, isiXhosa) and offline‑capable design ensure that farmers in remote, low‑connectivity areas can participate.
- Trust and quality assurance – AI‑powered crop grading (94% accuracy from a smartphone photo) and secure escrow payments build confidence between previously unconnected buyers and sellers.

A key milestone: AgriFresh was selected as a 2026 Award Winner in the UNDP Agri/Aqua Tech Challenge, validating its potential to drive sustainable agricultural transformation at scale.

The Innovation

AgriFresh is a voice‑first, AI‑powered mobile marketplace that directly connects smallholder farmers in South Africa to institutional buyers, eliminating exploitative intermediaries. The platform operates in rural and peri‑urban areas where digital literacy is low and connectivity is often limited to 2G networks.

How it works: Farmers use voice commands in their indigenous language (Sepedi, Xitsonga, isiZulu, or isiXhosa) to list produce, receive real‑time market prices, and connect with verified buyers. An AI computer vision model grades crop quality from a standard smartphone photo with 94% accuracy, replacing costly manual inspections. Secure escrow payments ensure funds are only released once the buyer confirms delivery, building trust between strangers.

Why it is unique: No other solution combines voice‑first access, offline functionality, AI quality verification, and indigenous language support in a single platform tailored to South Africa's smallholder context.

Scaling plans: Following a successful pilot, AgriFresh seeks to scale from 100 active farmers to over 25,000 within 60 months. The innovation has already been recognised as a 2026 UNDP Agri/Aqua Tech Challenge Award Winner, positioning it for national expansion.
