E-Heza is a point-of-care digital health platform designed by and for frontline health workers that ensures high quality, efficient primary healthcare when and where it is needed most. TIP Global Health has worked alongside frontline health workers and the Rwanda Ministry of Health since 2012 to co-create, test, refine, and expand our cost-effective model for primary health care delivery.Their work led to a 40% decrease in stunting (vs. 26% nationally), 51% decrease in underweight (vs. 28% nationally), and 65% decrease in <5 child mortality (vs. 41% nationally) among a rural population of over 338,000 people in Gakenke District. E-Heza Data Solutions was developed to rapidly accelerate implementation of our effective primary care delivery model. E-Heza now provides a complete primary care ecosystem for over 650,000 people in 4 districts in Rwanda. Over 400 nurses, midwives, and nutritionists in 55 health facilities and school feeding programs and 618 Community Health Workers in 371 villages conduct clinical assessments for over 175,000 community members each year. In January 2023, TIP Global Health officially signed a 3 year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Rwanda National Child Development Agency (NCDA) to expand all E-Heza modules to 10 new districts serving 4.2 million people. E-Heza is expanding to Burundi and Somalia through local partners in 2024.

The Innovation

E-Heza is a full service point-of-care digital health platform for primary care delivery that promotes adherence to clinical care guidelines for the prevention, identification and treatment of the most common infectious diseases in Sub Saharan Africa, as well as for childhood immunizations, growth and development, antenatal care, family planning, and non-communicable disease. Community and facility-based case management systems facilitate consistent follow up care and the contact tracing module allows for contact information to be gathered at the point of care to support efficient prevention and effective management of disease outbreaks. E-Heza utilizes collected clinical data points to suggest diagnoses and guide users through next steps based upon the appropriate level of care that is delineated by secure user-type pin codes. Historical data is used to generate shared progress reports and data trends to personalize care, demonstrate clinical successes, and identify clinical challenges before they become emergencies. These progress reports- including Immunization records and full medical histories- can be sent to families via WhatsApp. E-Heza eases workloads for frontline health workers and optimizes their ability to connect with community members to drive improved health outcomes.
