Reveal

MLC Vanguard | Created by Akros

Reveal is a Digital Global Good and an open-source platform that uses spatial intelligence to drive delivery of live-saving health interventions even to last mile communities. It supports decision makers and intervention managers by guiding and tracking delivery of in-field activities with precision and holding field teams accountable for action.

3,600,000 Lives Impacted

The use of Reveal has increased health campaign coverages by 20 - 30%. The reduction of disease burden through increased campaign coverage by that degree has been powerful.  Reveal also creates significant cost savings per disease case averted. Without Reveal, the cost per disease case averted was 118 USD. With Reveal, that cost dropped by 63% (to 44 USD per case averted).

To date, Reveal has impacted nearly 4 million people across the global south through improved deployment of health interventions for malaria, NTDs and vaccine preventable diseases. This impact ties back to the challenges field teams encounter while attempting to get health services to everyone. Often field managers are working blind, without the aids of maps or navigation assistance to find and reach all communities. Reveal provides the opportunity to accelerate disease elimination efforts, by extending the reach of campaigns beyond current capabilities.

Through the tool, field teams can visualise all the homes they need to reach, navigate to those homes, and collect data against specific structures. The tool provides in-application indicators to track progress and shares these data with remote field managers who are monitoring campaign progress. This functionality is important as it changes the equation from only understanding what you have covered to also understanding what you have missed. It provides detailed information on which houses have been missed and where mop-up operations or additional sensitization is needed. No other tool provides detailed, household-level information on campaign gaps.

The Innovation

Reveal is an innovative methodology and toolset developed by the Akros team in response to the various requests from Ministries of Health to improve campaign field coverage and has now expanded the tool to also serve neglected tropical diseases (through mass drug administration) as well as immunisation campaigns.

Health campaigns to serve neglected tropical diseases and immunisation often rely on field workers to accurately report the number of houses in a specific area but research shows that field teams often only find around 50% of the houses on the ground. This is a major constraint when an intervention requires 80-85% coverage of all houses to be effective. Reveal is an offline tool that helps health campaigns’ teams make sense of complex geospatial datasets, plan for maximum impact of health interventions, and monitor intervention delivery to reach the marginalised communities with life-saving health interventions. Reveal uses innovative methodology including robust geospatial data, derived from satellite images, to better understand where houses and  settlements are located. This data is used to support government planners to make decisions on where to deploy interventions to magnify impact.

Reveal’s technology can also help to identify risk layers to better visualise and understand where health needs are the greatest or where populations are least likely to be able to access routine health service delivery. Field managers use these plans to direct and monitor their field teams to target communities. Through Reveal’s technology, managers can see in real-time the number of people served, progress against goals, and which houses have been missed on the ground.
