There are huge opportunities for information and other digital services to empower people to sustainably improve their well-being, which can be delivered at scale and at very low cost per user. These can improve incomes and well-being, and improve environmental impact. Rigorous evaluations suggest that our services improve farmer yields on average by 4% (average impact, not intent to treat); increase adoption of recommended farming practices by 22%, and demonstrate a benefit-cost ratio of 10:1.

The Innovation

Precision Development (PxD) provides actionable information to the right people, in the right way, and at the right time. We do so to empower poor people in developing countries to improve their livelihoods, mitigate risks, and advance environmental sustainability. A majority of PxD's services deliver customized digital agricultural advice to smallholder farmers via their mobile phones. Our pioneering agricultural extension model is implemented in collaboration with partner organizations to maximize scale, and we continuously experiment, iterate, and gather evidence on impact to improve service delivery and demonstrate our value.

In 2022, digital systems built and supported by PxD are actively servicing over six million users with a range of platforms providing tailored digital information on crop optimization, pest management, input utilization, and environmental stewardship. PxD also leverages mobile technology to deliver information beyond agriculture, including to facilitate math education in Kenya, improving household nutrition, increasing the adoption of crop insurance and other financial services, and other interventions that advance well-being.
