Wheels of Opportunity - Scaling Income Through Mobility

MLC Voyager | Mozambikes

Mozambikes is piloting a pay-to-own e-bike model in Maputo that enables low-income urban workers to access affordable mobility and income opportunities. In partnership with Yango, beneficiaries use the bikes to complete delivery jobs, generating earnings while repaying the asset over time. The model addresses key barriers to employment, including lack of transport access, high operating costs, and limited entry into the growing urban delivery economy.

750,000 Lives Impacted

Mozambikes’ innovation improves livelihoods by enabling low-income urban workers in Maputo to access both productive assets and immediate income opportunities. Through a pay-to-own model, beneficiaries receive electric bicycles without upfront cost and use them to generate earnings via delivery services on platforms such as Yango. This approach directly increases income potential by expanding the number of trips workers can complete, reducing transport costs, and improving reliability and consistency of work.

Early projections indicate that participants can increase their earnings by 30–50%, while eliminating fuel expenses associated with motorized transport. Beyond income, the model promotes financial inclusion by enabling asset ownership and creating a pathway toward greater economic stability. The integration with a digital platform ensures continuous access to demand, strengthening repayment capacity and reducing risk.

Mozambikes brings proven operational experience from deploying bicycles at scale in Mozambique, and this pilot represents a key milestone in expanding its impact from rural mobility into urban income generation. The project establishes a scalable, self-sustaining model that can be replicated across cities, combining economic empowerment with sustainable transport solutions.

The Innovation

Mozambikes is implementing an innovative urban mobility and livelihoods model in Maputo that combines electric bicycles, digital job platforms, and inclusive financing. The project deploys 50 e-bikes through a 12-month pay-to-own model, enabling low-income urban workers to access productive assets without upfront cost. Beneficiaries use the bicycles to complete delivery jobs via Yango, where they receive real-time requests, earn per trip, and benefit from tips and performance-based ratings.

The model is designed to address key barriers to employment, including lack of affordable transport, high operating costs, and limited access to income-generating opportunities. By increasing mobility and productivity, participants can expand their service area, complete more deliveries, and generate higher and more stable incomes.

What makes this innovation unique is its integration of e-mobility with a revolving fund financing model. As users repay their bicycles over 12 months, capital is reinvested to procure additional units, enabling continuous growth without ongoing grant dependency. The pilot in Maputo will generate data to support replication and scaling across other urban centers in Mozambique and beyond.
