Healthy farmers, stronger supply chains
MLC Voyager | Elucid
Elucid is a Berlin-based social enterprise helping global brands de-risk supply chains by providing healthcare to farmers and workers while generating data for sustainability reporting. The innovation addresses a key driver of rural poverty and supply chain instability: high out-of-pocket healthcare costs that force farming households to delay or forgo treatment, often worsening health and reducing productivity. Elucid reduces this burden by financing access to care, ensuring that illness does not translate into financial shock or lost income.
62,000 Lives Impacted
When Elizabeth, a cocoa farmer in Côte d’Ivoire, couldn't cover the cost of lab tests or basic supplies at her local clinic, she gave birth at home. She is not an isolated case. Across the supply chains Elucid operates in, millions of farming households face the same choice: pay for care and risk financial ruin, or go without. A single untreated illness can reduce farm productivity by up to 20%.
Since 2022, Elucid has reached over 62,000 people and financed more than 42,000 doctor visits — the majority living on less than $5.50 per day. We have prevented over 1,000 catastrophic health expenditures, protecting families from falling into poverty. Services include enrollment in national health insurance schemes (where available), as well as our co-payment system for essential care and emergencies, covering life-threatening conditions, maternal healthcare, and essential medicines. Where needed, we also support quality improvements for local healthcare providers and deliver care through mobile clinics in remote areas.
Independent evaluations confirm the depth of Elucid’s impact: 94% of enrolled families report improvement in family health, 85% of cooperatives report improved productivity, and 86% report improved farmer retention.
Elucid is changing how supply chains approach risk, responsibility, and shared value - giving companies a tangible, measurable way to meet their sustainability and human rights goals.
The Innovation
Elucid delivers healthcare directly into supply chains by partnering with brands, exporters, traders, and manufacturers to finance and deliver care for their farmers and workers. By introducing supply chain health as a service, we turn farmer health from something unpredictable — or treated as a CSR afterthought — into a strategic investment that strengthens both social impact and business performance.
Unlike donor-funded or NGO-run health programs, Elucid is financed directly by the companies sourcing from these farmers. Multi-year, prepaid contracts make the model predictable and scalable and over time, cooperatives co-finance the health fund, aligning incentives across the supply chain. Brands and exporters pay an annual fee per household, registering farming families through cooperatives and providing them with a membership card to access care from vetted local healthcare providers.
Elucid's digital health and financing platform is designed for low-connectivity, rural environments. It connects farmers to care, tracks services delivered, manages healthcare provider payments, and generates real-time, verified impact data for companies and cooperatives. The system enables enrolment, claims management, and transparent reporting while working alongside national insurance schemes where available.
The model combines corporate financing from brands including Tony's Chocolonely, Hershey, JDE Peet's, Olam Agri, and ETG, with blended funding from public co-funders including Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, KFW (German state-owned investment and development bank), GIZ (German Agency for International Cooperation), to extend access in harder-to-reach communities.
By 2027, we are on track to reach 1 million people, making healthcare for farmers the new standard of sustainability in supply chains.
