Integrated Circular Waste Solution for Africa Cities

MLC Voyager | Chemolex Circular Bridge Africa

Chemolex is building inclusive circular economy infrastructure that transforms plastic and organic waste from underserved urban communities into sustainable products, green jobs, and climate resilience solutions across African cities. Implemented in informal settlements and low-income urban areas in Kenya, the model combines community-led waste collection, recycling innovation, smart interceptors for river restoration, and livelihoods for women and youth traditionally excluded from formal waste systems. The initiative addresses plastic pollution, flooding, unemployment, public health risks, and weak urban waste infrastructure while advancing environmental justice and regenerative urban development.

300,000 Lives Impacted

Chemolex is improving environmental health, livelihoods, and climate resilience in low-income urban communities across Nairobi through inclusive circular waste infrastructure. Over the past year, 12 river interceptors removed 4,200 tons of waste — including 2,400 tons of plastic — from polluted waterways, reducing flooding, drainage blockages, and exposure to waterborne diseases for an estimated 200,000 residents. More than 100,000 low-income households now access affordable waste collection services, significantly reducing illegal dumping and open burning while improving sanitation for nearly 500,000 people.

The initiative has also created structured green livelihoods for 1,250 women and youth waste workers, strengthening household incomes, food security, education access, and healthcare outcomes. In addition, 20 illegal dumpsites were transformed into safe green public spaces and children’s play areas benefiting 50,000 residents. Chemolex further advances climate resilience through recycled plastic infrastructure, eco-boards with passive cooling properties, and affordable renewable energy accessories that support wider adoption of solar home systems in underserved communities.

The Innovation

Chemolex is building an integrated circular economy solution that transforms unmanaged urban waste into climate-resilient infrastructure, green livelihoods, and healthier living environments for underserved communities across Kenya`s densely populated cities. The innovation combines community-led waste collection,data-enabled plastic waste recovery systems, river interception technology, modular recycling hubs, and low-cost manufacturing to prevent plastic pollution from entering waterways while converting waste into sustainable products such as eco-boards, recycled plastic paving blocks, and renewable energy accessories. By embedding waste recovery directly within informal settlements, Chemolex addresses one of Africa’s most overlooked public health and environmental challenges: the link between poor waste management, flooding, contaminated water, vector-borne diseases, toxic air pollution, and chronic urban poverty as well as mental health problems.

The model currently serves more than 500,000 low-income residents through affordable waste services, river restoration, and inclusive green employment opportunities for women and youth waste workers traditionally excluded from formal systems. Beyond environmental cleanup, the innovation improves community health outcomes by reducing exposure to cholera, typhoid, malaria, and respiratory illnesses associated with illegal dumping and open burning. Rehabilitated dumpsites are transformed into safe green public spaces and children’s play areas, while recycled plastic infrastructure strengthens climate resilience in flood-prone settlements.

What makes Chemolex unique is its systems-based approach that integrates environmental restoration, preventive public health, climate adaptation, circular manufacturing, and economic inclusion into one scalable community-centered model. Rather than treating waste as a sanitation problem alone, Chemolex positions circular economy infrastructure as essential social infrastructure capable of improving health equity, restoring dignity, and strengthening urban resilience. The initiative is designed for rapid replication across African cities facing rising plastic pollution, youth unemployment, weak waste systems, and growing climate vulnerability.

Chemolex is now advancing partnerships with governments, development agencies, and private sector actors to scale decentralized circular infrastructure across East Africa, with long-term plans to establish one of Africa’s largest inclusive circular urban resilience networks. This aligns strongly with growing global recognition that community-driven, locally led innovations are essential for improving health outcomes and advancing sustainable development at scale.
