Bena Care’s service has reduced up to 80% travel distance for patients, increasing adherence to treatment and improved clinical outcomes. The organizations services are reimbursed by the Social Health Authority, hence zero out of pocket for patients and Bena Care’s partnership with the county government has strengthened the public health systems by decentralizing dialysis services.
The Innovation
Bena Care’s mobile dialysis solution is a first of its kind innovation in sub-Saharan Africa designed to bring high quality life saving dialysis care directly to patients with chronic kidney disease in rural areas. Using 40ft shipping containers, Bena Care have engineered self contained dialysis units equipped with hemodialysis machines, reverse osmosis systems, drainage insulation and solar power, allowing them to function even in off grid locations. Each unit is mounted on a truck and operates a scheduled route, delivering care at local health centers twice a week. I.e. at point A Mondays and Thursdays, point B Tuesday and Fridays ETC. This approach allows one infrastructure to serve multiple communities, cutting down on travel time and cost for patients, improving adherence to treatment and relieving pressure on overwhelmed county hospitals.
